Safety at home for seniors is an important part of their everyday life to avoid slips, trips, and falls. It also allows seniors to stay independent in their own homes. At St. Joseph’s Home Care, our Safety At Home program allows our clients to maintain a safe and independent environment in their own homes.
Did you know that people are injured more at home than at any other location? Our Safety At Home program provides a free individualized home assessment with a summary of recommendations promoting independence and mobility, referrals to other services, snow removal through Brokered Workers (as available), and home maintenance and repairs referrals through Brokered Workers (i.e. grab bar installation).
Some high-risk areas to look out in your home are:
INDOOR Doors Furniture Walkways Bathrooms Bedrooms Kitchen |
FLOORING |
OUTDOOR Entrances well lit Entrances accessible Level walkways |
STAIRS Uniformity Visibility Handrails |
LIGHTING Adequate Non-glare Accessible switches Nightlights |
Examples of modifications we recommend to make your home safer include ensuring railings are secure, travel paths are clear, enough bright lighting, a safe mat at the entrance way, everyday dishes are within easy reach, and a flashlight is by the bed. Of course, all modifications are up to the client, but we are here to guide you and your family and help you make informed choices.
